What the extra memory is actually for

Graphics memory holds what the GPU is expected to reach without going and fetching it: texture sets at whatever resolution the game ships them, the resident slice of a streamed world around the player, frame buffers that grow with rendering resolution and colour depth, and the scratch space for shadows, effects and any upscaler's intermediate images. Filling any of those categories more generously is what a larger pool permits rather than what it causes — an engine still has to be written to use it, and still has to be able to draw the scene in the time available.

The same property makes this variant awkward to summarise. It can hold more than its 8 GB sibling does, which matters in the specific situations where a title has outgrown the smaller pool; in the many situations where it has not, the two are the same card wearing different labels.

What it is not

It is not additional throughput. It is not a claim of parity with consoles, whose 16 GB is one pool shared with the operating system rather than a graphics-only allotment. Most importantly it is not preparation for GTA 6, because Rockstar has announced the game only for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S on 19 November 2026, has said nothing about a PC version, and has published no system requirements to design against.
