The PC card's 8 GB sits inside a machine with its own memory bank that the game can also reach, but only across a slower path and with less predictable results. Reading 16 and 8 as a ratio is the mistake; the pools are shaped differently.

What the tension is really about

Extra memory buys headroom for larger texture sets, bigger resident chunks of a streamed world, and frame buffers that grow with rendering resolution and colour depth. It buys none of the speed needed to use them, which is why capacity debates keep drifting into throughput they cannot resolve.
